Mike Ramsey of Michigan reported today that Chrysler is considering selling the Viper to another company.  Possibilities are reported to include Panoz or Shelby...but although it's projected that either of these companies could continue to produce the Viper for years to come, will it still really be the Viper?  For anyone who has dreamed of owning a recently-made or contemporary Dodge Viper, now may be the time to buy.  Of course, purchasing classic Vipers will always be a possibility, so long as they're well-maintained.

This could of course, drive the cost of the Viper up, for a chance to get one of the last Dodge Vipers, if indeed Chrysler does sell the car's design.  Might this trend continue to pass on through additional automobile companies?  What other sports car designs might change hands to make way for new designs?  What other options to automobile companies have, if they want to devote funds toward new designs?  They could simply end production, but why would a company want to stop designing a car when they could instead sell the car's design?  Does that make the company a sell-out?

It's unlikely that car companies are about to devote what little cash they have left to simply adjusting the designs they already have, for they wouldn't want to seem to be growing stagnant, but what will happen to the beloved icons of Ameria's on-the-road culture?  Is selling a design to another company really any better than simply cancelling production of that particular car?  If the company that buys the design changes it beyond instant recognition, the symbol, the icon, no longer exists as it was known.
